Comparing Esurge to other Elites.
I have a question; why is Energy Surge so popular in GvG?
It seems to me like elites like Glyph of Renewal can accomplish so much more. You could even use it on Energy Burn to get the effect of Energy Surge minus the AoE damage. So far thats the only real difference I can see, Energy Surge gives you AoE damage....Is that really enough to make you not use Glyph of Renewal? Do people ditch possible 10s recharges on all of their spells just for 80-ish AoE damage every 20 seconds?!?
Am I missing something? Please give your insight.

I see your point there, but as far as I know, the AoE damage is exactly what makes it one of the more popular choices for GvG battles, and I'm pretty sure it's meant put pressure on the other team.
I mean, think about it: 80-90-ish wide-spread damage in less than two seconds while two-three warriors are going after casters?
Sounds like pressure to me...

Pressure = panic, or at least a greater chance of there being panic.
E-surge is cast.
OH NOES I HAZ DAMAGE!!!!111! HEAL PLZ!1
That's the only thing I can figure. Also, shouldn't this be in the GvG forum?

So people are using Esurge instead of other Elites just because it gives a small amount of pressure damage? I mean, cmon; 80-ish damage every 20 seconds isn't much at all, and certainly doesn't do enough to warrant an Elite spot imo.
The only trick I've seen with Esurge was using it to bait the LoD, but now that LoD is gone from the meta Esurge feels so ordinary to me.
I think this topic could belong to both forums but probably deserves to be here more.

afaik, mesmers use it one a 40/40 set. The damage is paired with some energy denial as well.
a combination of Energy Surge and Energy Burn can do respectable damage along with a good amount of energy denial.
Many of the mesmer skills have relatively long recharges anyway.
It seems, the only other elites mesmers use these days are Glyph of Energy and Hex Eater Vortex...though not so much on the latter.
I've seen some Enchanter's Conundrum + Shatter Delusion combos as well.

My thoughts are it forces someone to switch to a higher energy set sooner... which slows down their e-recovery. I also think it is one part of an overall e-denial strategy.

While it's damage is mediocre, it is better for it's e-denial. -8 energy of 3-4 opponents for just 10 energy.

Except it, you know, only drains the targeted person.

Simple: E-Surge has many uses and there isn't anything that outclasses it enough at one thing to warrant not being able to do the other things E-Surge does.
Surge is
-decent energy-denial (no elite for this purpose)
-a decent spiking skill when Shatter Enchantment cannot be used (vs Enchanter's Conundrum: more than half of the damage, unconditional, doesn't show the target of the spike, is useful for other things)
-a nice AoE bomb at times, especially VoD (no mesmer skill for this purpose)
Glyph of Energy is nearly weaker than Glyph of LESSER Energy, Glyph of Renewal simply costs too much and prevents Glyph of Lesser Energy and Mantra of Recovery is weaker than surge+burn+fast recharge items.

Well, if you look at other elite under Domination. E-surge is the one that can be used relatively well to either "Spike", "Pressure" - AoE dmg AND "E-deny"
All of those can be done in 1 skill!
Look at other skill such as:
1. Panic:
- It does not deal any dmg
- Too much energy - too complicated and waste skill slot for Auspicious Incantation
- If want to use this, you need the other hexes and it become a hex build instead.
2. Enchanter's Conundrum:
- Nice dmg dealer
- No AoE
-No pressure - the 100% longer enchant is not gonna be great since most useful life-saver enchant skills are 1/4 sec cast
- Some RA/TA use it for spike since its 4v4 not many enchants.
3. PD, Psychic Ins, Power Block, Power Flux, Simple Thief, Vision of Regret:
- No need to explain, these are for interupt, random shutdown or adreline dmg hex. Not relavent at all in GvG.
4. Hex Eater Vortex:
- People do use this in GvG deal to the nice dmg and hex remove.
Other Atribute:
Mirg, Arcane Lang, such and such: These need to fit to a specific hex build in order to make this work.

Glyph of Renewal is 5e. I understand everybody's points but I guess I have a soft spot for it. Having Shame every 10s, dual burns and dual diversions just seems like so much more to me.

I think everyone who ran/runs Glyph of Energy didn't care about the energy saving, they ran it to mass moar gale.
